Chemotherapy Risk Can Be Reduced Using Hybrid Treatments
Chemotherapy risk is not easy to predict, define and measure because every individual patient has their own unique inherent reaction to the intensely potent drugs used in the treatment of cancer. It is certain that there is great risks when using these powerful drugs, in fact, the treatment in some cases turns out to produce more intense side effects than does the very problem for which the treatment is prescribed to battle. A certain degree of negative reaction is inevitable when using a medication with this level of strength, which is why the focus should always be to reduce its use to the fullest extent possible.
It is quite easy to explain why the risk of chemotherapy treatment is so high. The purpose of using such a powerful drug has a single goal, which is to kill cells that are reproducing at such a high rate that a growth is being formed that will bring damage to the patient. A drug with so much power cannot be precisely controlled such that it does no damage to adjacent healthy cells. To some extent this is inevitable because there is no mechanism that enables the drug to distinguish between cells which are harmful versus cells which are healthy. There will always be a degree of interference with surrounding bodily systems, which will lead to undesirable side effects.
With the cells being destroyed indiscriminately, which is unavoidable using this type of drug therapy, there is a high risk that some of the body's systems can be permanently damaged. An example of this side effect is very graphically represented by the reproductive system. The systems of the body with the ability to produce eggs or sperm can easily be damaged when exposed to high doses of chemotherapy treatment. If you have a desire or intention to increase the size of your family, you should carefully consider the consequences from taking this type of treatment.
The highest risk resulting from chemotherapy treatments is the development of leukemia. This threat is very real, although it may be a delay of years between cause and effect. The higher the dose of the medicines used, the greater the chance that leukemia will develop. To reduce this risk across the board, the medical profession needs to develop new methods of treating cancer. The most promising current development consists of using a hybrid technique combining surgery along with chemotherapy.
This hybrid treatment begins with greatly reduced doses of dangerous drugs, just enough to reduce the tumour size. If no tumour has formed, but the cancer has spread to other areas, this method can still be helpful. The purpose is simply to reduce the cancer a level low enough such that an operation will be possible, the objective is to surgically remove the problem without the continual use of drugs. When the operation is over, additional light doses can be used to ensure that any remaining cancer cells are destroyed. This hybrid treatment will go a long way in reducing the risk of chemotherapy.
